Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket

Thank you for stopping by Jo’s Crafty Hook to get a free pdf copy of my Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket and for supporting the Preemie Crochet Challenge 2021 hosted by Helen and Sara of Sunflower Cottage Crochet!  The Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket is a new design just for this challenge!

This post contains affiliate links.  If you make a purchase using these links I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you.)

This is my 2nd year designing a baby blanket for the Preemie Crochet Challenge.  I feel strongly about showing my support because even though my daughter was born on time, she was unresponsive when she was born.  The umbilical cord became wrapped around her neck during delivery and it cut off her oxygen supply. She was in hospital’s NICU for 3 days.  She stayed unresponsive for hours after she was born.

My husband asked our church to pray for our daughter and God answered our prayers!  Later the same day our daughter was born, she recovered!  By the 3rd day she was responding well and we were able to take her home!

My baby wasn’t born premature, buy I still designed a Preemie sized blanket along with a Cradle, a Stroller and a Receiving Blanket sizes.  Below you can see the different sizes done by my testers.

Here’s what Catherine had to say about this design:

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby is such a fun project to
make. It would have to be one of my favourite projects so
far for 2021. The pattern is so well written, easy to
understand and works up beautifully. I found that it can be
a great scrap buster, where stitch markers are a great
help…It can be made to any size you like…Being one of
the testers I was having so much fun making it, that I
found it so hard to put my work down to do those things
like housework and other daily chores.

As part of year 2 of the Preemie Crochet Challenge 2021, hosted by Sunflower Cottage Crochet, you can get a FREE pdf copy of the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket!  To get your free pdf copy, until August 31, 2021 please use the download button below and use the Coupon Code:  LITTLESTAR

I am hoping you will donate your version of the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket to a preemie baby in need.  You can donate to your local hospital’s NICU or to someone you know who has had a preemie baby.

Thank you for your support!  I would LOVE to see your version of the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Blanket!  You can find me at any of the social media sites listed below.  To return to the Preemie Crochet Challenge 2021 please use the button below.

Yarn for Menstrual Health

I wanted to talk to you about a taboo subject that most people don’t like to talk about, Menstrual Awareness.  During the months of March to May there are quite a few organizations out there that try and spread the word about this taboo subject.  These organizations talk about menstrual hygiene and spreading awareness for young girls, just like the girls below need to hear about.

One of the organizations I want to talk to you about started the Yarn for Menstrual Health campaign, but first I wanted to share a little bit about my story as a young girl.

I wish this was a topic we talked about when I was a young girl.  I started my menstrual cycle when I was 12 years old.  This was not a topic talked about in my household, even though there were over 10 women in it.  While I was away at camp I started my period.  I had NO idea what was happening or how to deal with it.  I was so afraid to talk to anyone about it or even go to the nurse to find out how to handle it.  For my first period I used toilet paper the whole time, this was not very hygienic to say the least.

The week at camp was not an experience I remember fondly.  The whole time I was so scared!  I was afraid everyone would make fun of me if they found out.  The whole time I was there all that ran through my mind was what is happening to me?  Does it show?  Did I use enough toilet paper?  Was I bleeding through my clothes?

As a 12 year old girl in 6th grade I didn’t know how to handle it at school either.  My mom wrote a note to my teacher asking if I could go to the restroom by myself so I didn’t have to take care of it in front of other girls.  Not only was this embarrassing enough, but the 6th grade teacher was a man!  In 6th grade all toilet stalls did not have a door, so there was no privacy.  I was terrified, not wanting anyone to know what was happening to me.

I know there are girls out there that are going through the same things I did.  I know there are others who probably have it worse because they are in situations where they can’t get a hold of or afford the needed supplies.  I know when I was 12 I had no clue these things even existed!

While you are there be sure to sign up for my Newsletter by clicking on the Subscribe Button in the top right hand corner.  You will receive news with more Helpful Tips; news about my New Crochet Pattern Releases, Collaborations, and MORE!  For signing up you will also get a FREE crochet pattern!

Yarn for Menstrual Health Campaign

So let’s talk about Yarn for Menstrual Health campaign.  A woman named Haseeta together with Morines Shop and the African Girl Foundation started this campaign.  It was created to bring  awareness about the unhygienic circumstances most school girls across Kenya endure during their menses. She along with the ladies in her group had pledged to make 1,000 hats to be distributed by the African Girl Foundation where they will also distribute menstrual packs to various schools in 2021.

Their aim is to normalize conversations on menstrual health. Similarly, they are raising funds to equip everyone in need with reusable sanitary kits.  These sanitary kits cost $10 and consists of 4 reusable pads and washing soap to last an entire year.  How awesome is this?!

Not only is menstrual hygiene an issue in Kenya, but this is an issue young girls in the US face as well.  Some schools are starting to talk to girls about menstrual hygiene and how to prepare them on how to handle it.  But this is still a subject no one likes to hear about.

Poverty, no matter where it is at, plays a huge roll in menstrual hygiene.  Most young girls and women can’t afford to purchase the sanitary products they need because of the expense.  Some women are having to decide whether to buy sanitary products or food.  How awful would it be if you or your child had to choose one of these options?

To help bring awareness to young girls and women, there are many great organizations out there that are trying to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene.  The Yarn for Menstrual Health is one of these great organizations.  You can find out more about this campaign at the link below.

https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/c/article/yarn-for-menstrual-health-campaign

https://www.morinesshop.com/yarn-for-menstrual-health-a-plea-to-do-more/

Here in the US, you can find more information about menstrual hygiene at everydayhealth.com and sanitary ways to handle periods for young girls and women.

If you would like to take part or learn more about Yarn for Menstrual Health visit this link.

Help me Raise Money for Menstrual Health

You can purchase a PDF copy of the Wattle Stitch Beanie and $3 of part of the proceeds, will go to the African Girl Foundation to help in raising menstrual hygiene awareness.  You can find a copy of the Wattle Stitch Beanie in my Ravelry Store by clicking on the image of the beanie below.  Please help me support Menstrual Awareness!

  • Take a photo of yourself wearing the hat and share it on social media

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Attaching the Pockets

With the right side of your shawl facing you and the right side of your pockets facing you, center each pocket near the bottom of your shawl’s short sides.

I used a Diamond as a reference and center over 1 Diamond with the Diamond rows centered in the Pocket.  If your Shawl is too big, center your pocket over your middle rows.

Sew the pockets onto your shawl using the whipstitch or whichever stitch you prefer to sew on pockets.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Pocket Full of Diamonds Shawl

Fringe

Optional

Step 1:  For each space you are going to place your fringe, cut three 14” pieces of yarn.  I place mine 2” apart.

Step 2:  With the right side of your shawl facing you, line up the short end in front of you on a flat surface.

Step 3:  Fold 3 pieces of yarn in half and line up their ends. Use your hook to pull their center down into a space at the very bottom of your shawl’s short side.

Step 4:  With the pieces still on your hook, loop all the ends over your hook, and pull them through.

Repeat Steps 1-4 on both short ends of your shawl.

Trim your fringe so tassels are even across the bottom of your shawl.

That’s it!

Nellie Poncho Free Crochet Pattern

Today I am SO excited to be sharing with you the Nellie Poncho Free Crochet Pattern!  I designed the Nellie Poncho in the Spring of 2020 after learning a new stitch while testing for another crochet designer.  The Nellie Poncho uses the N Stitch, once you get the hang of it I promise you will LOVE it too!

Fringe

Fringe (Optional)

  1.  Cut pieces of yarn 10”-12” long
  2. Use 2 strands of yarn for each section of Fringe.  If you want a heavier Fringe add more pieces of yarn to suit you.
  3. Put the ends together and create a loop that can be threaded into the edges of the Poncho. Knot pieces of Fringe onto the Poncho.  This will give you 4 strands of yarn to create the Fringe.
  4. You can use your crochet hook to pull the loops through the edges of the Poncho and then thread the fringe through the loop.  Pull tight to create your knot.  Make sure to pull the loop in the same direction.  This helps all of your knots to match.

Switch to H or 5 mm Hook

Attach yarn in any stitch along the Neck Opening, slip stitch, chain 1 and sc in the same stitch.  sc in each stitch around.

For a Smaller Neck Opening, add 2-3 more rows of Single Crochet.

Nellie Summer Tee Free Crochet Pattern

Today I would LOVE to share with you another free crochet pattern by Jo’s Crafty Hook Designs!  The Nellie Summer Tee Free Crochet Pattern started with a new stitch, the N-Stitch.   I learned the N-Stitch during the Spring while testing for another great crochet designer group, Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

This page contains affiliate links.  You can make a purchase using these links that I provide where I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you.)  Purchases you make will help keep my website, Etsy Shop, and my Ravelry Store going and provide quality designs just for you!

If you have never crocheted the N-Stitch, there are Video Tutorials listed in the information about the pattern.  The Left Handed Video Tutorial is done by me and the Right Handed Video Tutorial is done by Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

My crochet pattern testers fell in LOVE with the N-Stitch just like I did!  I would LOVE to give them a BIG shout out because they worked really hard on this design.  There were many hiccups because of the trying times we are in right now.  There were yarn delivery delays, finding time to finish the test, and just trying to function during these troubled times.  I appreciate EVERY single one of them!  They are Jolanta Urb, Anita Reinisch, L. Holly George, and Laina Mann Malcolm.  Below are their versions of the Nellie Summer Tee.

If you would like to receive news when I release another free crochet pattern, or take part in another giveaway, or when I am having a sale please use the form below to sign up for my Newsletter.

Leave a long tail for sewing shoulders closed.

Sides:

  • Lay Right Sides of the panels facing each other.
  • Use the Table at the top of the pattern for the size of your Armholes.  I measured from the top of the panels and placed Stitch Markers where you will stop when sewing sides closed.
  • Start at the bottom of the panels and sew the sides together using the Whip Stitch, or Mattress Stitch until you get to the Armholes.
  • If you would like more room at the hips, leave a 2”-4” slit at the  bottom on each size of the Panels.  I made a 2” slits.

Shoulders:

  • Using the Table at the top of the pattern, find the size of the neck hole opening.
  • Place your Stitch Marker where you want to stop the opening on both sides of the top.
  • Sew the panels together using the Whip Stitch or whichever method you prefer to sew the shoulders closed.
