Just an Inch of Color Potholders Free Crochet Pattern

The Just an Inch of Color Potholders Crochet Pattern is a great Scrap Busting project.  It calls for the use of at least 2 different colors of #4 ply Cotton Weight Cotton.

Each color change is just an inch, that’s how it got it’s name.  There are 2 sizes to choose from inside this pattern, but the sizes are easy to customize.

This design is an eco-friendly way to cut back on the use of store bought hot pads/potholders.  The finished Potholders can also be used as Coasters, Mug Rugs, Hot Pads, Trivets, and can even be used as Napkins.

Just an Inch of Color Potholders Crochet Pattern
Ad-Free version of the Just an Inch of Color Potholders Crochet Pattern.

You can find an Ad-Free Premium Copy of my Just an Inch of Color Potholders Crochet Pattern at my Ravelry Store at a discounted price of $2.50.

My testers did a fantastic job!  Thank you Christina Anderson, Martha Camacho Kelly, Nancy McKain, Amanda Suder and Thomas Williams for testing the Just an Inch of Color Potholders Crochet Pattern!

As you can see there are so many beautiful colors and variations you can use to create your own versions.

Information needed to make your own potholders.

I used Premier Just Cotton #4 ply Medium Weight Cotton Yarn.  (87 yds/80 m) (1.76 oz/50g)

Materials:
MC: 100-150 yds #4 Medium Weight Cotton Yarn
CC:  150-200  yds #4 Medium Weight Cotton Yarn
US D or 3.25mm Crochet Hook
Scissors
Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:
ch = chain
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
rep = repeat
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrasting Color
RS = Right Side
WS = Wrong Side

Finished Sizes:
4” x 6”
6” x 6”

Notes:
due to different thicknesses of cotton yarn, you may need to go up or down a hook size.

The hot pad crochet pattern can be customized to create the perfect size for you.

I changed colors after every 3 rows, but you can use as many colors as you like.

Gauge:
US D or 3.25 mm Crochet Hook
16 st x 12 rows = 4”

Gauge Swatch:
R1:  ch 17, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next st, *sc in next st, dc in next st  rep from * across. ch 1, turn (16 st)

R2-R3: *sc in 1st st, dc in next st. rep from * across. ch 1, turn (16 st)

R4-R12: rep R2-R3

Customizing:

The Potholder/Hot Pad can be customized if you prefer a bigger or smaller size.  Below is a breakdown of the amount of stitches and rows you can add or subtract for your specific size.

1” = 4 st x 3 rows

2” = 8 st x 6 rows

3” = 12 st x 9 rows

4” = 16 st x 12 rows

**Tip:  Weave in your ends of yarn as you go**

When you are fastening off your ends, why not try weaving in your ends when you start the next row.

This helps keep your edges straight.

* Leave at least a 4” tail of yarn.

*When starting a new color, weave in the color you just fastened off and new color as you start crocheting your next row.

That’s it!  You have made your version of the Just An Inch of Color Potholders!  The potholders can be made in so many beautiful colors to match your Home Decor.

I would LOVE to see what you create!

Long Stalks Placemat

Long Stalks Placemat

The Long Stalks Placemat crochet pattern uses a crochet stitch I designed recently. It is called the triple crochet box stitch.

The Triple Crochet Box Stitch can be called the Triple Crochet X Stitch or the Triple Crochet Crossover Stitch.  The design is a take of the Double Crochet X Stitch, it just uses triple crochet instead.

Triple Crochet Box Stitch or Triple Crochet X Stitch

Triple Crochet Box Stitch can be found on my YouTube Channel.

Boxy Bulky Cowl

I originally created the Triple Crochet Box Stitch for the Boxy Bulky Cowl.  I wanted a longer stitch because I was using a #6 ply Bulky Yarn.   I wanted to give the cowl a nice textured stitch that would create a drape to the cowl.

Most cowls are designed for a tighter stitch because most of them are worn to keep the chill out.  Since I was using a bulkier yarn, I wanted something that wouldn’t cause the wearer to get too hot.

If you would like to try the Triple Crochet Boxy Stitch with a heavier yarn, like Paintbox Yarns Simply Super Chunky, you can find the premium crochet patterns at my Ravelry Store or LoveCrafts or at my Etsy Shop.

Last year the Getty Museum challenged people to recreate famous works of art. The results were sometimes amazing, sometimes hysterical. I decided to try my own recreation using crochet. Turns out, one of the biggest challenges was finding a famous painting that looked easy enough to duplicate in yarn but still appealed to me visually. I wanted something colorful to cheer me up on these dreary days. Settling on one of Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings, I rummaged through my yarn stash to find the appropriate colors.
